DOUBLE-HOMICIDE CONVICTION

Yesterday, after two hours of deliberation, a St. Landry Parish jury convicted Sanplice Simien, 48, of the first-degree murder of Michael Thomas and Ladarious Keller.
Late Thursday afternoon, the jury also found Simien guilty of three counts of attempted first-degree murder of Emrick Simon, Ladarious Leblanc and Vondrick Jimmerson. Back in early October of 2020 the five young victims were sitting in a parked truck on Cook Street in Morrow, Louisiana, when Simien approached the truck from the driver’s side and opened fire with handguns in each hand.
District Attorney Chad Pitre commented, “we are grateful the jury brought justice and some peace to these families for these violent killings.” Chief felony prosecutor, Alisa Gothreaux represented the state during the trial. Louisiana law mandates a life sentence for first-degree murder. Simien will be sentenced to no less than life on each count of first-degree murder and from ten to fifty years on each count of attempted first-degree murder. Sentencing is set for May 8, 2025.

Three Indicted for First-Degree Murder in Opelousas “Drive By” Shooting.

According to District Attorney Chad Pitre, the St. Landry Parish Grand Jury today indicted Gerard Griffin, Deshawn Hickman, and Isaiarion Warden for first-degree murder of Jaleel Guidry; three counts of attempted first-degree murder; and one count of assault by drive-by shooting. On October 20, 2024, Guidry, his girlfriend, and his two young children came under fire from numerous gun shots while sitting in their parked vehicle outside their home in the 800 block of Ina Clare Drive. The gun fire came from a black SUV driving in the area; Griffin, Hickman, and Warden were later determined to be the occupants of the vehicle and the shooters. The investigation also revealed that Alexziah Joseph and Finecia Draper became accessories after the fact when they aided the shooters in an attempt to conceal their identities and avoid punishment. Joseph and Draper were both indicted with one count of being an accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. All defendants will be set for arraignment on their respective charges on the Court’s next available date.
